5 simple ways to boost your immune system
From moving your body to getting enough sleep, here’s how to stay healthy naturally.
There’s nothing like a global pandemic to get everyone Googling, ‘how to boost your immune system’. As a former elite sportsperson, staying in top physical condition has always been important to me. I’m also a single mum and wellness entrepreneur which means I need to stay energised and flu free.
If you want to stay out of the doctor’s waiting room and pharmacy line, here are some simple things you can do every day to say, “No deal” to illness and inflammation.
1. Eat foods rich in antioxidants.
Consuming antioxidant-rich foods not only supports immunity, it improves gut health and reduces stress. Snack on a variety of fresh berries, plums and nuts like walnuts, pecans and pistachios. Fill your trolley with vegetables like artichokes, cauliflower, red cabbage and bell peppers. And flavour your meals with green mint, cinnamon, cloves and oregano. All these foods and spices are high on the antioxidant scale. And yes, the rumours are true, dark chocolate gets the antioxidant tick (just don’t eat the whole block).
2. Move your body every day.
Daily exercise boosts your immune system in a variety of ways. It increases blood flow, reduces stress hormones, and helps your immune cells perform more efficiently. Find exercise options you enjoy and block out non-negotiable time each day to get moving. I mix it up with walking, spin classes, Pilates, yoga and resistance training. Variety keeps things interesting and helps with motivation.
3. Use Supplements.

4. Maintain a positive mindset.
We’ve all heard about the power of positive thinking but did you know that optimism can actually boost your immune system? Studies have shown that optimism has a positive effect on cellular immunity while negative emotions can lead to a weaker immune response. I maintain my positive outlook by keeping a gratitude journal and engaging in positive self-talk. I also surround myself with uplifting people and avoid those with heavy, toxic energy.
5. Get plenty of sleep.
A good night’s sleep is like filling a car up with premium fuel. It ensures your body is operating at full capacity. While you’re dreaming, your immune system releases proteins that control the growth and activity of your immune cells. Try and get at least seven hours of quality sleep each night. Make a few simple dietary and lifestyle changes today and your body will thank you tomorrow. While no one is perfect, consistency is key. If you can start integrating healthy habits into your daily routine, they’ll soon become second nature. A strong immune system and healthy future awaits.
